Unrelated: Anybody else out there been eating a pint of blueberries/day? Just me?
I’m thinking about music today–my workout playlists. They’ve sort of…evolved. I used to listen to a lot of Eminem and, I guess, gangsta rap, and basically a bunch of stuff I wouldn’t want my dad to know I listened to. I thought I really had no choice. It thought it was the only music that could match my movement tempo. And maybe I felt that working out = aggression. But then I began to sort of pepper my playlists with some Christian music–not the sleepy stuff, or the screaming sopranos stuff–and I started to notice something: When I listened to a secular song, I’d feel powerful and angry; when I listened to a Christian song, I’d feel powerful and good/hopeful/happy. Eventually, my playlist has become almost entirely Christian songs, with the others dropping off over time. I just like how this music makes me feel! I like moving and sweating and feeling close to God at the same time. I like the sort of double blessing of strengthening my body and my soul together. Dare I say this is a form of worship? I love this bit from The Message translation from the book of Romans in the Bible (chapter 12):
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.
It’s kind of like Here I am, God! I’m a sweaty mess, but I love you and I’m doing this because I want to take care of this body you gave me, and won’t you please come hang out with me for a bit?
And he does. Best. Workout. Partner. Ever.
